︎︎︎Contemporary Visions of Beauty

A perfect image is the image which the artist finds to be complete. For painters of past centuries perfection also lied in the subject and its depiction. A portrait was a tribute, a monumental representation of a person portrayed in an absolute condition. Beauty standards are therefore prominent elements of portraits, which are mapped by the latter across the centuries.

Today’s ideas of beauty will probably change before you hit refresh. Neoliberalism and technology have given us the power to alter them in real time and popularize features once unpopular. AR has created a utopia of experimentation, where beauty can now be translated in a set of horns, freckles covering the whole face, replaced by face tattoos for the next 24 hours. In this way, the tempo-rarity of stories lightened the moral baggage of beauty.

This series of images explore the notions of right and wrong in a juxtaposition of content, its semiotic meanings and AR filters as a contemporary definition of perfection.

THE VIRGIN IN PRAYER, 1640–50,
by @Sassoferrato
x Piercing by @nelzster01

*The beautiful porcelain face of the holy mother of Christ praying. The ultramarine blue used for her robes, just brilliant. But wait a minute. How can a woman from Jerusalem have such a light complexion? Are the piercings of a 2020 filter less relevant than her white skin?
